Children have been enjoying newly refurbished play equipment at play areas in Stevenage that they helped to design.

Stevenage Borough Council’s play area refurbishment programme is almost complete, with four out of seven of the remaining play areas reopened and the remaining three due to reopen shortly.

The four completed play areas are Camps Hill, Parishes Mead, Lapwing Rise, and Shearwater Close. Last week, open day events were held at Camps Hill and Shearwater Close, with over 150 children attending both events along with their parents and carers.

Canterbury Way Playing Fields, Riccat Lane and Chancellors Road are due to open on Friday (2 August).

Stevenage Borough Council is spending £455,000 on refurbishments to the seven sites.

Earlier this year, the council asked local residents and children the top five items of play equipment they would most like to see in the new designs. Over 250 children helped to decide on what should be integrated into each, and new equipment will include trampolines, a group swing and activity trails. The council also worked with Make Space for Girls and will be incorporating lots of innovative and social fun hang out spaces for girls to enjoy, particularly at Canterbury Way Playing Field, which is possible due to its size.

A council spokesperson said:

“It is great to see our excellent new play areas come to fruition and to already have seen so many children enjoying the equipment. We have received lots of positive feedback from young people and their families, and we hope that the play areas will be enjoyed for many years to come.”
