Keeping our town clean

We work hard to keep our streets and public places clean. This includes picking up litter and sweeping the streets.

How we clean

  • All streets are litter-picked every two weeks and the town centre every day.
  • Roads are swept regularly, with mechanical sweepers, as long as parked cars don’t get in the way.
  • The Town Centre and Old Town High Street are cleaned regularly during the day.
  • Local shopping areas are visited daily.
  • We remove rubbish from public land.
  • Empty litter and dog waste bins at least once a week.
  • We help with clean-up events in the local area.

How you can help

You can help keep our town clean by:

  • Always putting your litter and chewing gum in the bin.
  • Using recycling bins when you can.
  • Making sure your business has a proper waste collection service.
  • Picking up after your dog.
  • Not putting up posters or stickers in public places (this is called fly-posting and it’s illegal).

Cleaning schedule

Our street sweepers follow a regular route around town, starting in St Nicholas and ending in Martins Wood. We also clean big roads (like dual carriageways) more often.
If something unexpected happens — like a big mess — we’ll send a team to clean it up.

We clean all public roads regularly, but sometimes we may need to change the schedule depending on what’s happening in the area

Extra cleaning services

We offer street sweeping services to local businesses and builders. These can be one-time or regular clean-ups for places like:

  • car parks,
  • building sites, and
  • roads near shops or offices.

Our service is offered at competitive and reasonable rates.
