Ryan Ansell who started with us as an Apprentice in Leisure and is now a Health and Sport Strategy Manager

Ryan Ansell

What role did you start in as an apprentice, and where are you now?

“I began my career at Stevenage Borough Council in 2017 as a Leisure and Sport Development Apprentice within the Communities and Neighbourhood Team. This opportunity provided a strong foundation in the leisure and health sector, allowing me to develop key skills in project management, event coordination, and partnership working.

Through hands-on experience, I contributed to the delivery of impactful leisure and wellbeing initiatives that supported our local communities.

Since completing my apprenticeship, I’ve progressed through a range of roles, including Community Sport and Leisure Development Officer, Community Development Officer, and Assistant Programme Manager.

These experiences have shaped my professional journey and prepared me for my current position as Health & Sport Strategy Manager, where I continue to lead strategic programmes that improve health and wellbeing outcomes across Stevenage.”

Looking back, what difference did it make to your personal or professional development?

“My apprenticeship has made a significant contribution to both my personal growth and professional development. Gaining practical, hands-on experience across a variety of projects has enabled me to develop new skills and strengthen others in real-world environments.

Working within a Local Authority has also given me valuable insight into the wide-ranging services we deliver and the positive difference they make to local communities.

In addition to this experience, I’ve gained recognised qualifications in Project Management, Health & Safety, and Sport Development, all of which have equipped me to take the next steps in my career with confidence.”

What advice would you give to someone just starting an apprenticeship?“

“If I could offer two key pieces of advice to anyone beginning an apprenticeship, they would be these:

First, say yes to every opportunity, even the ones that push you beyond your comfort zone. These are the moments that challenge and shape you, helping you grow both personally and professionally.

Second, don’t fear mistakes. They’re an inevitable part of learning. What truly matters is how you respond and use each one as a stepping stone to improve, adapt, and build resilience in your career journey.”
