Lewis is our Regeneration Business Support Apprentice.

Lewis Kimpton

What made you choose an apprenticeship with the council?

"I chose an apprenticeship with the council because I was really intrigued by the idea of working in local government. From the moment I had applied, it was clear that the role available within the regeneration team would offer a nice change of pace from the work I’d previously done in the private sector — with a much more positive environment.

As someone born and raised in Stevenage, the opportunity to contribute to the town’s transformation felt like a unique opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

After interviewing with Lucy and Tash, I felt even more confident about the decision. It was also encouraging to see that so many apprentices at SBC go on to progress in their careers — it made the role feel like the start of something with real long-term potential."

What’s the best thing about your apprenticeship so far?

"Without a doubt, the people. Everyone I’ve met at the council has been so welcoming — from Doug and Pep at the front entrance, to the wider teams on the fifth floor, and of course the regeneration team I work with every day.

There’s a strong sense of support and teamwork, and I’ve never had a negative interaction with anyone since starting, which can be a rarity!

My line manager Lucy has been especially supportive, and that’s made a huge difference as I’ve settled into the role."

What would you say to someone thinking about applying?

"Make sure the role itself is right for you, and that you’re genuinely interested in the role you’re applying for.

Apprenticeships involve a lot of learning, and if the subject doesn’t interest you or match your skill set going into it, that can make the day-to-day feel like a right slog.

But if you’re enthusiastic about the work and open to developing new skills, it’s a great way to build your career — especially in a place like SBC where you’re well supported and encouraged to grow."
