Amy is our HR & Payroll Apprentice.

Amy Sherar

What kind of work are you doing day-to-day?

“I am currently a payroll apprentice at SBC, having started my role in May 2024. Since then, I’ve gained valuable skills that have supported both my professional development and personal growth.

Working in payroll involves a wide variety of tasks to ensure employees are paid correctly and on time, whilst complying with legal and organisational requirements.

Some of my tasks include employee information management, tax compliancy and calculations, record keeping, and communicating and supporting staff.”

How has it helped you grow or build confidence?

“I am constantly learning and really enjoy applying the theory I learn in college to real-life situations in my day-to-day work.

The ongoing support of my team and SBC as a whole, has helped me grow in confidence and take steps outside my comfort zone.

An example of this was the local government apprentice of the year event. I was nervous about it at first, but it turned out to be a fantastic experience — and I even won a prize!”

What would you say to someone thinking about applying?

“To anyone considering an apprenticeship, I can confidently say it’s worth it!

It’s an amazing opportunity to gain career-ready skills and the sense of achievement that comes from putting your learning into practice is truly rewarding.”
