Household waste

The Recycling Centre on Caxton Way is a free service provided by Hertfordshire County Council.

It is provided for residents taking their own household waste and recycling (except hazardous waste) and will not accept waste from trade or business activities.

You can visit this recycling centre if you pay your Council Tax to Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex or Central Bedfordshire councils. Please take proof of address (for example, driving licence, Council Tax bill, Hertfordshire bus pass or a utility bill)

The Waste Aware website provides information on what you can recycle and queuing times

Opening times

The recycling centre is open 7 days a week:

  • Monday to Friday and Sunday - 10am to 6pm
  • Saturday 8am to 6pm.

The recycling centre is open on all bank holidays except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Please note: If the site is closed during its advertised opening hours, it is most likely to be due to the servicing of a full container, which should take no longer than 20 minutes.

Van Permitting Scheme

If you are a site user who wishes to dispose of your household waste at the recycling centre using a van, pickup truck, commercial type vehicle or vehicle and trailer combination, you will need to apply for a van and trailer permit from Hertfordshire County Council (HCC).

If you are in any doubt about the waste services provided by HCC, please contact the Waste Management Unit.
