Important Information on Battery Disposal and Recycling
Please do not dispose of batteries in your household waste or recycling bins.
Our waste collection and processing systems are not equipped to handle batteries, and the crushing process used in waste trucks and depots poses significant risks of fire and toxic contamination.
Batteries are not accepted as part of the kerbside waste and recycling service. However, there are several convenient options for safely recycling batteries and electrical items:
- Battery Recycling at Supermarkets: Most major supermarkets provide collection bins at their entrances for loose household batteries, including AA, AAA, D, 9V, and button cell types. Please check the signage on the bin for specific instructions.
- Local Recycling Centres: Used batteries and small electrical items can be recycled at your local facility. For residents in Stevenage, please visit the Stevenage Recycling Centre | Hertfordshire County Council web page.
- Built-in Battery Devices: Items containing integrated or rechargeable batteries—such as electric toothbrushes, vapes, power tools, laptops, and similar devices—should be recycled intact at your local recycling centre.
- Retailer Take-Back Schemes: Many high street electrical retailers offer a "like-for-like" recycling service, allowing you to return an old item when purchasing a new, similar product.
- Automotive Batteries: Garages typically offer to recycle car or motorbike batteries when they replace them. If you’re replacing the battery yourself, please deposit it at the electrical section of your local recycling centre. These batteries contain lead and corrosive acid, so exercise caution. If possible, seek assistance from a qualified mechanic.
