Stevenage Old Town - A place with history
Stevenage Old Town, in the north of the town, has a long and proud history.
It began as a small village many hundreds of years ago and grew over time. Some of the buildings you see today are very old and full of character.
The High Street still follows its original layout, giving it a traditional feel. Today, it brings together the past and present, making it a special place to visit and explore.
There’s a mix of history, local shops and friendly businesses – or, if you fancy a relaxing stroll, there’s a tree-lined walk just around the corner.
The High Street is mostly flat and pedestrian-friendly, making it simple to explore on foot. It is a great place to meet friends, relax and enjoy your time, day or night.
You can find out more about the history of the Old Town on the Our Stevenage website - Old Town history.

Shops, food and services
There are lots of independent shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs to choose from. You can also find hairdressers, beauty services and there's a gym and music studio just off the High Street.
Whether you want to shop, eat out, grab a drink or record your first album, there is something for everyone. And there is always a warm welcome on offer from the small, family run businesses to the big companies.
Green spaces to enjoy
The Old Town has lovely green spaces to enjoy. The Avenue, known to many locals as Conker Avenue, is a long tree-lined path that is especially popular in autumn.

The Green is a great open space, at one end of the High Street, where people can relax, meet friends or attend events. You can also see the War Memorial here, which is an important place for remembering and reflection.
At the other end of the High Street, and just a short walk from the Town Centre is King George V Playing Fields. A large open space for sport, events and family activities, making it a popular place for the community. There is a large play park, cricket field and bowls green.
Stevenage Day - one of Hertfordshire's biggest social events is held here.
Events and community activities
Stevenage Old Town hosts lots of events during the year that bring people together and attract visitors from across the area. The High Street is often busy with live music, seasonal events, markets and activities for all ages.
Popular events include:
- Old Town Live, which brings live music and entertainment to venues across the Old Town.
- The traditional Stevenage Charter Fair, with rides and attractions for families to enjoy.
- Remembrance Sunday at the War Memorial on The Green. A time to remember and reflect.
- The Christmas lights switch-on with music and entertainment, and of course, the lights.
There are many more community events helping make the area feel welcoming all year round.

Local amenities and travel
The Old Town is well served by local amenities. There are schools nearby, including The Thomas Alleyne Academy (the oldest school in Stevenage) along with a range of everyday services that support the local community.
It is also close to Stevenage Town Centre, making it easy to access more shops, services and leisure facilities. There are good public transport links, including bus routes and nearby train services, helping people travel in and around the area.
Supporting local businesses
Stevenage Borough Council has helped create a short video called Welcome to High Street Stevenage Old Town to promote the High Street. It shows the range of shops and services and encourages people to visit.
High streets are changing, but businesses in the Old Town are working hard to offer new ideas while keeping their local feel.
