Strategic Director
Being a Strategic Director at Stevenage Borough Council is about more than managing services—it’s about shaping the future of our town and ensuring the community thrives. This leadership role sits at the heart of decision-making, working closely with elected members, senior officers, partners, and residents to deliver on the Council’s long-term vision.
This is an exciting and transformative time for Stevenage. As the UK’s first New Town, our history has always been shaped by ambition, innovation, and a strong sense of community. Today, that founding spirit continues to drive us forward. With over £1 billion of investment already secured, we are in the midst of a once-in-a-generation regeneration programme. Work is well underway to revitalise our town centre, enhance public spaces, deliver high-quality homes, and create new opportunities for residents and businesses alike.
At the core of the role is aligning strategic priorities with delivery on the ground. Whether it’s leading regeneration projects, strengthening housing and community services, driving sustainability initiatives, or ensuring financial resilience, the Strategic Director provides the vision and oversight needed to turn ambition into real outcomes.
Collaboration is essential. By working with public sector bodies, private sector investors, and local community organisations, the Strategic Director ensures that resources are maximised and services reflect the needs of residents. This is about listening to people, understanding local challenges, and translating them into policies and programmes that make a genuine difference to everyday life.
Equally important is the role’s leadership within the organisation—championing innovation, inclusivity, and continuous improvement. By empowering teams, setting clear expectations, and fostering collaboration, the Strategic Director helps staff deliver excellent services and achieve meaningful outcomes.
Ultimately, this is a position of both responsibility and opportunity: to help shape Stevenage as a modern, sustainable, and inclusive town where residents feel proud to live, work, and grow.
