What is STEM?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

STEM is all around us – it helps us understand the world and shape the future. From developing life-saving medicines to building spacecraft and creating the latest tech, STEM is at the heart of innovation and solving real-world problems.

Why is Stevenage Borough Council talking about STEM?

Because Stevenage is a STEM hub!

  • Our town is home to a thriving STEM industry, with companies working in aerospace, life sciences, tech, and more.
  • These industries offer a wide range of careers - from entry-level and apprenticeships to degree-level roles - as well as supporting jobs in admin, security, catering, social media and other non-STEM areas.
  • Local employers want to hire and train local people – there’s a great opportunity here for Stevenage residents to grow their skills, build careers, and succeed in the STEM sector.

What skills do you need for a STEM career?

You don’t need to be an expert to get started in STEM.

STEM employers are looking for people who:

  • Ask questions and like solving problems
  • Keep going when things get tough
  • Are curious, creative and work well in a team
  • Communicate clearly and want to keep learning

If that sounds like you – you’ve already got what it takes to begin your STEM journey.
