Stevenage Central Framework
In July 2015 Stevenage First launched the Stevenage Central Framework. This outlines the exciting opportunities which will be used as the basis to drive forward the town centre regeneration.
The Framework set out how the town centre can adapt and evolve to meet the needs of a 21st-century economy and community while responding to changes in retail, leisure, employment and movement patterns. It complements the Local Plan and acts as a basis for shaping regeneration projects, investment decisions, and development opportunities. At its core, the Framework aims to ensure that the town centre remains a place that benefits residents, businesses and visitors alike by attracting investment, improving connections and revitalising public spaces.
Since then, the team has been busy developing the detail behind the framework, commissioning studies into transport, infrastructure and other areas. These will be the catalyst for future private and public sector investment in order to deliver new housing, shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. At its core is the redevelopment of the railway station which acts as the town’s gateway and will be a critical enabler for wider regeneration.
Work includes driving regeneration through the development of the Stevenage Town Investment Plan, created in 2020 by the Stevenage Development Board, with the town being awarded £37.5 million in March 2021 to bring forward nine projects.
