Residents are encouraged to keep an eye out for four new children’s litter artwork banners that will be appearing across Stevenage parks, neighbourhoods and two council refuse trucks.

These vehicle banners were unveiled by the Mayor of Stevenage Councillor Sandra Barr and Councillor John Gardner, as part of the new “Keep Stevenage a Clean and Green town” litter initiative.

Mayor Councillor Sandra Barr said: “My congratulations to Chaise, Jacob, Liamari and Paige who won the artwork competition. Look out for their amazing artwork on the side of the refuse vehicles. It was a great joy to be invited to choose the winners with Cllr John Gardner. Stevenage has such talented children it was a difficult task, but if a five-year-old child says “Litter is rubbish, binners are winners,” we should all listen.”

The winners of the children’s litter artwork competition, held last autumn, joined Councillor John Gardner, Executive Member for Environment and Regeneration and Mayor Sandra Barr on 15 March at the local waste transfer station to see their artwork on the refuse trucks and tour the site.

The children were able to explore inside the vehicle cabins, take photographs with their artwork and see what happens to their refuse and recycling when it leaves their homes. Stevenage Borough Council officers would like to thank the talented children who designed the artwork for the Clean Green litter initiative: Liamari (aged 5), Paige (aged 5), Chaice (aged 6) and Jacob (aged 10).

The #CleanGreen initiative aims to encourage communities to strive for a clean, litter free town and help improve the local environment by reporting what they see. Stevenage Borough Council will be installing the children’s artwork around the town with a QR code for residents to scan with a mobile device. This will allow people access to all the resources they will need to report full bins, notify the council of instances of fly tipping, borrow litter picking equipment and read up-to-date information on how litter is managed in Stevenage.

Litter is a costly and unnecessarily damaging activity for our environment. Join the four young litter heroes by helping to keep Stevenage a clean and green town.
