There's nothing quite like a World Cup summer. Streets come alive, flags fill the air, and for a few glorious weeks our town has yet another reason to come together and celebrate.

Stevenage Borough Council wants our town to be part of that magic, and is encouraging every resident to join in, support their teams, fly their flag, and celebrate the tournament safely and with pride.

Councillor Myla Arceno, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Wellbeing at Stevenage Borough Council, said:

“Major sporting events like the World Cup are a fantastic opportunity to bring our communities together. At moments like this, we often see residents proudly flying flags in support of their teams, creating a real sense of togetherness and shared excitement across the town.

“In Stevenage, we celebrate that spirit of community pride and would encourage residents to get involved. At the same time, it’s important that flags are displayed safely and with consideration for others, so that everyone can enjoy the tournament.”

Fly your flag - Five simple rules

To keep the good times rolling safely, the council asks residents to follow these easy guidelines:

  • Safety first: Make sure flags, poles and fixings are secure so they don't pose a risk to people, vehicles, or property.
  • Respect your neighbours: Avoid blocking visibility, access routes, or neighbouring properties. Considerate flag flying is friendly flag flying.
  • Get permission if needed: Attaching a flag to a structure you don't own? Check first, especially lampposts and communal buildings.
  • Follow national guidelines: Keep to the rules on flag size, positioning, and display.
  • Keep it looking great: Maintain your display proudly and take flags down if they become damaged or unsafe.

“We are proud to support residents in making the most of the tournament, taking a balanced and proportionate approach to ensure flag displays are safe, respectful and a source of genuine community pride.

“Our priority is to support a positive, inclusive atmosphere across Stevenage during the tournament. By taking a few simple steps, residents can help ensure that everyone can enjoy the World Cup safely and respectfully.”

So, fly your flags, Stevenage. You never know… this year, it just might be coming home!
