The Youth Mayor represents and promotes the interests of Stevenage young people. It is also an ambassador role which means you’ll represent young people at important events and help make sure their voices are heard.

Being the Youth Mayor for Stevenage involves:

  • Representing Stevenage young people at events and council meetings
  • Attending Full Council meetings (you’ll have a seat but won’t vote)
  • Being part of the Youth Team and sharing ideas from other young people
  • Helping manage a local Youth Budget for projects that matter to local people
  • Attending important events with the Mayor

To stand for Youth Mayor, you must:

  • Live in the borough of Stevenage or attend a Stevenage school
  • Be aged between 13 and 19 years or up to 25 years if you have additional needs (if you’re under18 years, or under 25 years with additional needs, you’ll need permission from a parent or carer)
  • Be able to commit to being Youth Mayor for a one year-term
  • Take part in the Town Twinning Tri-partite visit as part of Stevenage Borough Council’s Civic group forum (dates will be shared at the information session)
  • Attend Full Council meetings and act as a link between the council and the Youth Team

How the Youth Mayor gets elected:

Young people in Stevenage will vote for their preferred Youth Mayor candidate through a democratic election process. Staff at Stevenage Borough Council can offer candidates some support with creating and running a campaign. Once the campaign period has closed, the candidate with the most votes will become the next Youth Mayor and the candidate with the second most votes will become Deputy Youth Mayor.

Timetable information

  • Tuesday 17 Feb – initial applications close
  • Thursday 19 Feb – Info session for all applicants (4:30 – 5:45pm)
  • Sunday 8 March – Applicant manifestos submitted
  • 9 March (week beginning) – Final 6 applicants selected & start campaigns
  • Sunday 12 April – Voting closes

How to apply

To apply, all you need to do is complete the online application form by midnight on Thursday 19 February.
