Our Mayor, local dignitaries, business leaders and residents gathered on Saturday 25 October at the Gordon Craig Theatre for the annual Stevenage Together Awards ceremony to see a number of local heroes honoured.

The winners were revealed by Leader of the Council, Richard Henry, at an event hosted by the Mayor of Stevenage, Cllr Nazmin Chowdhury and compered by Laura Alexandra, a well-known host and the voice for many local Stevenage events.

Awards were handed out across 11 categories – New Stevenage Business, Environment, STEM, (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths), Wellbeing, Sporting, Rising Star, Caring, Team, Community Champion, Lifetime and the Judges’ Special award.

Fosters Solicitors were this year’s main awards sponsor, and the winners were:

New Stevenage Business Award (sponsor Co-Space) – Thistle & Willow. An innovative concept, specialising in bringing together many different business uses into one prime location in Stevenage Old Town, including co-working, pop-ups, workshops and lots more, bringing unique energy and creativity to our high streets – they attract visitors and support other local companies in the process, while helping Stevenage to prosper as a lively, welcoming place for everyone to enjoy.

Environment Award – David and Jenny Creed and the Green Space Volunteers. This year’s well worthy recipients are part of a wider group who are well known within the Stevenage community. They work tirelessly to enhance and maintain our local green spaces, helping to create a more vibrant and welcoming environment for everyone in the town

STEM Award Bioscience Catalyst. Stevenage has the third largest cluster of cell and gene therapy companies in the world. This year’s winner has gone above and beyond supporting STEM education for the young people of Stevenage. The team has demonstrated a clear commitment to inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers through two impactful initiatives.

Wellbeing Award (Sponsor The Stevenage Healthy Hub) – Ami MacKenzie and The Wellbeing Junction – A remarkable individual whose compassion and commitment have helped others feel supported, included, and inspired. Ami has set up a wonderful safe space for children which is accessible for all, making Stevenage a happier, healthier place for everyone.

Highly commended - Stevenage Cycling Hub – Celebrating its 5th birthday, the Stevenage Cycling Hub has had a huge impact on the health and wellbeing of many people living within Stevenage.

Sporting Award (sponsor Everyone Active) – Malcolm Chapman, an individual who is far too modest to acknowledge the incredible impact their time and effort has had on so many young lives. He founded the Herts Roller Speed Team, coached eight children to become national champions, and supported two athletes who went on to represent the GB development squad.

Rising Star Award (sponsor Stevenage Indoor Market) – Winnie-Marie Stewart, a truly special individual whose dedication has already made a significant mark in Stevenage. This remarkable young lady is only 7 years old and has raised over £5,000 for the Little Princess Trust by cutting 10 inches of her hair to donate to this fantastic cause.

Caring Award (sponsor Reef Origin) - Carly Stacey, a truly remarkable individual who has already raised over £10,000 for local charities and has signed up to run the London Marathon in 2026 to continue giving back. Despite the challenges they face with the different systems they work alongside in the community, they continue tirelessly, giving their time and energy to local charities and organisations that make a real difference to our society.

Team Award (sponsor Sureserve Compliance Central) – Julie Burrows, Mary Szulikowski and the Stevenage Sporting Futures team have helped create countless opportunities for young people to learn, grow, and shine through sport. Their collective dedication continues to inspire a love of activity, teamwork, and community pride that will benefit Stevenage for many years to come.

Community Champion Award (sponsor Fosters Legal Services) – Stevenage Filipino British Community. The team has supported initiatives that reduce social isolation, create opportunities for young people and providing a platform for individuals to showcase their skills and talents. Among these different initiatives is the extremely successful Stevenage Barrio Fiesta, showcasing Filipino heritage and bringing people together from all backgrounds to celebrate cultural diversity.

Lifetime Award (sponsor Jewson Partnership Solutions) – Heather Altringham, her journey with Trotts Hill Primary School began more than 30 years ago, first as a volunteer and later as a valued member of the Governing Board. Alongside her work in education, she also dedicated 45 years to midwifery, many of those at the Lister Hospital. She is a shining light within our community and a wonderful example of selflessness, dedication, and care.

Judges’ Special Award – Stephen Black and Stuart Mendelson and their dedication in launching The Muster Point - providing a lifeline for many in our community. Since its launch, The Muster Point has continued to grow, bringing people together through weekly breakfast meets, offering wellbeing and friendship to veterans and their families, and even launching a podcast to reach others far and wide.

A posthumous Judges’ Special Award recognised Kenneth Moore, a remarkable man who devoted so much of his life to helping others. Kenneth passed away at the age of 81 years, but his selflessness and quiet determination that made a difference to so many, and his legacy of compassion continues to shine through the people and groups he supported.

Cllr Nazmin Chowdhury, The Mayor of Stevenage, said: “These special awards allow us to pay tribute, once a year, to a few of our local heroes – the people and organisations who enhance the lives of hundreds of residents across Stevenage every day.

“Ours is a great town, with fantastic things happening all around us. Some truly amazing people are making things happen, making things better, and making a real difference to life in Stevenage.
