A Stevenage resident is being supported by Stevenage Borough Council as he takes on a marathon challenge that shows great strength and kindness, running while carrying a wheelie bin.

Daniel Fairbrother will be running the 13 miles of the St Albans Half Marathon on 14 June, with the Stevenage Borough Council wheelie bin. He is running to raise money for two children of family friends, both children have cerebral palsy. Not only will Daniel be carrying the bin but he’s also planning to run with it loaded with an extra 30 kg. This is the same weight as the two children he’ll be supporting in his marathon fundraiser.

Daniel said:

“I am running the St Albans Half Marathon for Stevenage twins Harper and Marlowe who have cerebral palsy. They turn five in June.

"Their parents Poppy and Lewis do so much for the girls and have held lots of events to raise funds for additional physiotherapy, intensive therapy and equipment to help the girl's live life to the full.

"Poppy and my wife Hayley are good friends so I have known the girls for a while now and I wanted to find a way to help raise money.”

The idea of running the event with a wheelie bin came from Daniel’s wife. “I contacted Stevenage Borough Council as they have previously supported me in my ventures, and once again they were more than happy to help. They supplied me with a black wheelie bin for which I am very grateful.”

Despite the great challenge, Daniel feels he can make it. “I know that the people of Stevenage will cheer and support me when they see me out running, I'm grateful to live in a town where the community gets behind such a great cause.”

Councillor Rob Broom, Cabinet member for Environment, Transport and Planning at Stevenage Borough Council said:

“When we learned Daniel planned to do such a heroic fundraising feat, our council and staff at our waste and recycling team were delighted to step in and offer our support. We supplied one of our bins to help him raise money for such a worthy local cause. I and our staff wish him every success on his half marathon in St Albans.”
