Stevenage Town Centre is going through a period of change, continuing to be a place where everyone is welcome and can enjoy shopping local, having a coffee and joining in with local events held throughout the year.

Stevenage Borough Council is working closely with AccessAble to support the accessibility of the Town Centre and its shops. Previously known as DisabledGo, AccessAble takes the chance out of going out and provides detailed information around accessibility of local areas, offering Detailed Access Guides explaining a venue’s access in facts, figures and photographs to give a real overview of the town. Venues are checked in person by trained surveyors, making AccessAble unique.

Since the pandemic the way we shop has changed dramatically and our town centres and high streets have had to adapt quickly to entice customers back and increase footfall back into their stores.

Stevenage has lots of good quality high street brands all located within our town centre. We have a great mix of smaller independent traders too who offer great value for money, quirky gifts and a wide range of products, so why not come along and take a look?

Event Island, Stevenage is also a great space to sit and watch the world go by while enjoying a coffee from one of our local baristas.

If you’re further afield, why not jump on the bus? Our Bus Interchange is fully accessible with a fully accessible toilet and changing facilities.

Councillor Sandra Barr, Portfolio Holder for Co-operative Council and Neighbourhood Communities said: “It’s fantastic that Stevenage Town Centre is working closely with AccessAble to ensure our town is accessible and supporting our stores to make considerations for their customers.

“We want everyone to enjoy a great shopping experience here in Stevenage and with the new Bus Interchange and the train station located just a few minutes from the town centre and plenty of parking in the new multi-storey car park there are lots of sustainable ways to travel into the town.

“We have plenty of high street brands and small independent traders who all depend on us to shop local. Our event schedule is packed throughout the year, with some fantastic opportunities to come along and enjoy the close-knit community we have here in Stevenage. Why not come along and see for yourself?”

Our indoor market is also a great place to shop too – if you’re a keen seamstress or good with the knitting needles, why not pay a visit to the haberdashery stall? There are loads of friendly market traders, with a whole host of knowledge to share.
