Beryl Bikes return to Stevenage with new sustainable measures
Beryl is delighted to announce the return of the popular Beryl Bike Scheme in Stevenage on Monday 30 June 2025. This return signifies a renewed commitment to providing sustainable and active transport options for the Stevenage community, following a temporary pause to address vandalism.
The scheme will initially re-launch with a reduced fleet of 60 bikes and 19 parking bays, focusing on the town centre vicinity. This phased approach will allow Beryl and Stevenage Borough Council to carefully manage the introduction of bikes and take proactive action against any damaging behaviour, ensuring the longevity and continued success of the scheme for all users.
"We are incredibly excited to bring Beryl Bikes back to Stevenage," said Phil Ellis, CEO of Beryl. "We know how valued the scheme is by residents, and we share their disappointment at the incidents of vandalism that led to its temporary closure. We have used this time to implement upgrades to the bikes, enhancing their durability and protection against vandalism. We are committed to working closely with the council and the community to ensure this scheme flourishes as we know it can. We strongly encourage everyone to look after these bikes, report any vandalism, and help us maintain this fantastic scheme for Stevenage."
The re-introduction of bikes will be gradual throughout the launch week, with the aim of reaching full operating capacity, including an expanded fleet and service area, by the autumn.
Cllr Loraine Rossati, Cabinet Member for Economy, Skills and Transport at Stevenage Borough Council, commented, "We are really pleased to see that upgraded Beryl Bikes are now available in Stevenage, following the wanton vandalism that took them from our residents earlier in the year. We will be monitoring this initial reintroduction before expanding to a wider number of sites.
“Our sense of community pride is strong in Stevenage and we have all been let down and disappointed by a criminal minority hell bent on taking something good away from us all. I urge the community to be vigilant around the area as bikes are reintroduced, helping to ensure that they remain available for everyone to enjoy. We know how popular they are and we'd like to keep it that way.
“The bikes are a fantastic asset. We are working collaboratively with Beryl and Hertfordshire Police so that the scheme continues to be a success. Please do report any incidents of vandalism via the police, or the Beryl app.
“Enjoy cycling, enjoy the outdoors, and enjoy our town!”
Beryl bikes are designed for everyone, promoting outdoor activity and healthy lifestyles across all generations. These bikes, a proud initiative supported by the Stevenage Development Board, are an important community asset and all users are encouraged to take collective pride in them and care for them, recognising their vital role in sustainable travel.
Beryl and the council are working collaboratively with Hertfordshire Police to monitor and tackle vandalism and damage to the bikes.

Hertfordshire Constabulary Police Community Safety Sergeant Karen Mellor said: "We would urge anyone who witnesses anybody vandalising or using one of these bikes inappropriately to contact us immediately.
"These bikes are for the benefit of the community and criminal damage of this nature will not be tolerated. We will deal robustly with anyone whose actions are criminal and impact the successful implementation of this scheme."
