Many people will be looking forward to spending more time outdoors as temperatures are expected to rise this week.

If you’re travelling, exercising, gardening or simply relaxing outside, a little preparation can help you enjoy the warmer weather comfortably and safely.

Staying cool during warmer days

Homes can become quite warm during hot weather, particularly in the afternoon and evening.

To help keep cool:

  • Close blinds or curtains in sunny rooms during the day.
  • Open windows when it feels cooler outside.
  • Take breaks in shaded outdoor spaces where possible.
  • Keep a bottle of water nearby and drink regularly throughout the day.

If you are exercising or doing physical activity outdoors, earlier mornings and evenings are often more comfortable times to be active.

Sun safety tips

If you are spending time outdoors, remember to:

  • Wear sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat.
  • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen with UVA protection.
  • Seek shade regularly, especially around midday.
  • Choose light coloured, loose fitting clothing in hot weather.

Travelling in warm weather

If you’re heading out on longer journeys, plan ahead by taking water with you and checking weather conditions before you travel.

Cars can become very warm in sunny weather, so it’s important to make sure children, older relatives and pets stay cool and comfortable while travelling.

Looking after one another

Warm weather is a good reminder to check in with your neighbours friends and family members who may appreciate a little extra support during hotter days.
