Local Election delays statement
Cllr Richard Henry, Leader of Stevenage Borough Council said,
“From our Cabinet discussions today (Wednesday 14 January 2026), there is a clear consensus that postponement of the May 2026 elections for a year is the preferred way forward. It is the option that best protects local services, finances, and our responsibilities to the town as we navigate Local Government Reorganisation over the next two years.
“This is the greatest change in local services in more than 50 years and these are exceptional circumstances.
“The previous government opted to postpone many elections to allow Local Government Reorganisation in other areas, meaning a one-year delay ahead of electing new councils isn’t unprecedented.
“We expect a decision from Government about the size and shape of new councils before July 2026 and understand there will be elections for new shadow councils next year.
“We support a one‑year postponement of Stevenage Borough Council’s May 2026 local elections, to ensure safe, efficient, and timely Local Government Reorganisation, to maintain vital services and work on transitioning services to new councils.
“Because Stevenage held elections for all council seats in 2024 following ward boundary changes, those seats due for election in 2026 will have served only two years rather than the usual four-year term.
“We have considered lots of different factors in reaching this decision. However, it is important to restate that the final decision rests with the Secretary of State.”
