England banner with the words congratulations lionesses

On Sunday 31 July 2022 the English women's national football team, also known as the Lionesses, brought home England's first major trophy in over 50 years.

Not only did they win but they did it in style beating Germany, the two times world champions, 2-1 in extra time.

In front of a record breaking 87,192 crowd, at Wembley Stadium, England took the lead in the 62nd minute with a goal from substitute Ella Toone.

Following a German equaliser by Lina Magull, eleven minutes from time, it looked like English hearts would once again be broken, but a very tired looking England managed to hang on and took the game into extra time.

Sarina Petronella Wiegman, the lionesses' manager, had instilled a winning mentality in her squad and they were not ready let go of their dreams. Just ten minutes from the end, as yet another penalty shootout with Germany was looming, a second and decisive goal from substitute Chloe Kelly sealed the victory.

Until Sunday the German team had never lost any of the 8 Euro's finals, they previously played, making this an even sweeter victory for the Lionesses.

From your fans in Stevenage and way beyond, a very well deserved, congratulations to the entire England women's national football team and everyone else associated with the victory. You have given the country a much-needed boost; something to celebrate with pride, that has already begun to inspire the next generation of champions. Thank You.
