Community being asked for ideas to transform bus station on Danestrete
Our new Stevenage Bus Interchange on Lytton Way will be opening in Spring 2022 when the current station will close, providing an opportunity to make some exciting changes to the vacant space on Danestrete. Stevenage Borough Council is asking the local community to share their views on what they would like to see happening in the heart of the town centre.
Although the wider redevelopment of the current bus station site will happen later as part of the SG1 masterplan, when the existing bus station closes we will be delivering a first phase of works to begin to transform the area and provide a very different look and feel. We would like to provide exciting activities and entertainment for the local community to enjoy during this period and would like to know what local people would like to see in the space.
When the full Garden Square regeneration works begin we would like these concepts to carry across and be integrated into the permanent scheme.
If you’re a business, resident or community group, please complete our survey with your thoughts and ideas. The aim is to create a vibrant destination with the flexibility to adapt to different kinds of uses. This will help to animate the space and create a focal point of entertainment for everyone to enjoy, increasing the time people spend in the town centre and supporting existing businesses through extra footfall and time spent in the town centre.
Cllr Sharon Taylor, Leader of Stevenage Borough Council, said: “The current bus station on Danestrete occupies a central space and we want this to become a place that the local community can enjoy all year round, with new amenities and a relaxing space. This will help to increase the vibrancy and build upon the current offer in the town centre, ahead of the final SG1 Garden Square scheme being delivered.”
Cllr John Gardner, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Environment, said: “Our residents are at the heart of everything we do and this is why we are asking for your views before we introduce any uses into the space. Our town centre should be a place for everyone and we look forward to hearing what our communities would like to see here, so that we can work together on these designs”.
The closing date for completing the survey is Thursday 17 March 2022. Use the button below to take part in survey.
You can also scan the QR code on posters found around the bus station. Alternatively, the Stevenage Even Better Visitor Centre (located off the Town Square, open Wednesdays to Saturdays 10am - 4pm) will have hard copies of the survey and any questions can be answered by our team at the Visitor Centre.
Everyone that answers the survey will be entered into a prize draw to win a garden centre voucher.
The new bus interchange will vastly improve travel links with the railway station and provides much needed improved facilities for bus users such as heated/covered waiting areas, accessible toilets and a café.
