Clarification on the Icon Development in Stevenage
We are aware of recent speculation circulating on social media regarding the use of the Icon development on Lytton Way for asylum seeker accommodation. We would like to take this opportunity to provide clarity and reassurance to our residents.
The Icon development is a privately-led housing scheme being delivered by Hill Group, with support from Lloyds Living and Sovereign Network. This scheme will bring 576 new homes to our community, including 56 affordable homes that will be allocated to local people from the council’s housing register. The remainder of the homes will be available for private rent and ownership.
We want to emphasise that the council has not been approached by the Home Office or any other agency regarding the use of this site for asylum seeker provision. Additionally, we have had no communication from any London borough indicating that they are in contract negotiations or seeking to acquire access to this new housing.
We understand that housing is a sensitive and important issue, and we encourage residents to seek information from official sources and to avoid sharing unverified claims that may cause unnecessary concern.
The delivery of new social and affordable homes for local residents is a key priority for the council. The new independent living scheme at Brodie Court is now fully occupied, and we have many schemes in the pipeline that will deliver over 240 new homes in the town over the next 2 years. The Oval redevelopment is also upcoming in the future, which too will provide over 200 more local council houses for our community and improve an area that is in need of regeneration.
We remain committed to transparency and to keeping our residents informed about new developments in our town.
