Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) marks the final end to the Second World War.

It is commemorated on 15 August, the date in 1945 when Japan surrendered, bringing over six years of global conflict to a close. Earlier that year, Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) was celebrated on 8 May, marking the end of the war in Europe following Germany’s surrender. However, fighting continued in the Far East, where conditions were harsh and the challenges extremely tough.

VJ Day honours the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who served and endured in these final, difficult months of the war. It is a time to remember all who contributed to the victory, to reflect on the cost of the freedoms we enjoy today, and to ensure that the stories of those who lived through the war are never forgotten.

We will remember them

At 10am on 15 August 2025, we will come together at The Bowling Green in Stevenage Old Town for a wreath-laying ceremony to mark VJ Day – the day the Second World War finally came to an end. It is a chance for us to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served in the Far East, and to remember the impact this moment had on people and families around the world.
