80 Trees for Stevenage at 80
A living legacy for our Town
Celebrating 80 Years of Stevenage through trees
To celebrate Stevenage’s 80th anniversary, Stevenage Borough Council is planting 80 trees along a four-mile heritage trail through the town.
The 80 Trees for Stevenage at 80 project will create a lasting green legacy for future generations. The trees will improve the local environment, support wildlife and help make Stevenage greener and healthier.
Following Stevenage’s history
The trail passes through five neighbourhoods: Bedwell, Broadwater, Shephall, Chells and Pin Green. It starts in Bedwell and finishes at Hampson Park, following the growth of Stevenage as the UK’s first New Town.
Where possible, the trees will be planted around 80 metres apart to link communities along the route.
As the trees grow, they will provide shade, colour and homes for wildlife, while helping to improve the local environment.
Expert advice and planning
The council worked with Keith Sacre of Barcham Trees, a leading tree expert, to plan the planting scheme.
He advised on which trees would be best for each location, taking account of their surroundings and how they will grow in the future.
The scheme includes a wide range of trees to help protect against pests, diseases and the effects of climate change. The council would like to thank Keith for his valuable contribution.
The signature tree: Tulip Tree
The Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) is the main tree featured in the project.
It is known for its distinctive flowers, impressive size and bright autumn colours. It represents growth and the future of Stevenage.
Several Tulip Trees will be planted at key points along the trail, including the first and final planting locations.
A wide variety of trees
The trail will feature 80 trees, including familiar native species and trees from around the world.
These include:
- English Oak and Sessile Oak
- Silver Lime and Small-leaved Lime
- Purple Beech and Weeping Beech
- Whitebeam and Hornbeam
- Tulip Tree
- Persian Silk Tree
- Kentucky Coffee Tree
- Walnut and Hickory
- Chinese Red Birch
- Sweet Gum
- Ornamental Cherries, Hawthorns, Maples and Elms
The variety will provide different colours, flowers and foliage throughout the seasons.
Benefits for people and nature
The new trees will help to:
- Increase the number of trees across Stevenage.
- Improve air quality and absorb carbon.
- Provide shade and help cool the town in hot weather.
- Support wildlife and pollinators.
- Improve streets and open spaces.
- Support residents’ health and wellbeing.
- A greener town for future generations.
Project launch
The project was officially launched on Wednesday 28 October 2026.
The first tree was planted at Walden End, opposite Vista Tower. The final commemorative tree was planted at Hampson Park Pitch and Putt.
Councillors, volunteers, Council staff and members of the public joined the celebrations.
The remaining 78 trees will be planted over the following weeks, with the trail expected to be completed in early December.
Discover the Stevenage 80 Tree Trail
Once the trail is complete, residents and visitors will be able to explore all or part of the four-mile route.
Whether you enjoy walking, wildlife or spending time outdoors with family and friends, the trail offers a new way to discover Stevenage’s green spaces and neighbourhoods.
The trees will change throughout the year, offering seasonal flowers, fruits, leaves and autumn colours. The trail will also provide opportunities for schools and families to learn about trees, wildlife and the environment.
