How has COVID-19 affected council services?

We have made a decision following Government guidelines to postpone and cancel a number of services. The following will be suspended until further notice to help delay the spread of the virus:

  • Community Transport (and further services are currently under review)
  • Play
  • Play Centres
  • Visitor Centre (Stevenage Even Better)
  • Stevenage Leisure Limited including:
  • Gordon Craig Theatre

Further announcements about our services will follow shortly.

Can I still access housing advice if I am homeless with suspected COVID-19?

Arrangements are in place for us to support rough sleepers with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 symptoms as part of the council’s response to the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.

Now that social distancing is in place, will your events programme continue?

All events have been cancelled until further notice.

Are your parks and green open spaces still accessible?

Yes, our award winning parks including Fairlands Valley, Town Centre Gardens, Hampson Park and Shephalbury Park in Stevenage are remaining open. Play areas and open air gym equipment within our parks are now available but people should adhere to the Government advice around social distancing.

Can I park my vehicle at the local park?

Yes, you can. We want to encourage walks and exercise for general health and well-being but social distancing.

Are the local elections and police & crime commissioner elections being held?

Following Government advice and guidance, both of these elections have been postponed.

I am a victim of domestic violence; can I still get support from the Council?

Stevenage Against Domestic Abuse (SADA) is still offering support during this difficult time albeit remotely over the phone. Please let us know if we can help and support you or someone you know that is suffering from domestic abuse. Please contact the team on 01438 242666.

I am a leaseholder and am due to attend a MRC consultation event, is this still taking place?

All MRC public events have been postponed and leaseholders will be contacted directly to address any concerns that can be dealt with over the phone.

Can I still come to the Customer Service Centre for my enquiries?

Our Customer Service Centre doors closed on Wednesday 25 March 2020, however you can still contact us on 01438 242242 or email, csc@stevenage.gov.uk to make a private appointment.

What do I do if I need to submit documentation?

At the CSC, we are changing the way we take in documentation. You can send documentation directly to the Benefits service or place them in a sealed envelope in the post boxes outside Daneshill House main reception or the CSC. This will then be sent to the appropriate service area for scanning and returned to you in the post.

Should I view a property I am looking to mutually exchange with?

Our Mutual Exchange service is running normal service.

Are the Independent Living housing schemes in Stevenage still open and can I visit my relative(s)?

We have made changes to the way we work in line with government advice. We are contacting residents instead of visiting them and only visiting if assessed it is essential. Family visits have been restricted following government guidelines.

Are the car parks in Stevenage closed?

As part of the Government's easing of lockdown restrictions and ahead of our town centre businesses reopening on 15 June, car parks in the town reopened on Monday 1 June.

I work in the Blue Light services – where can I park?

There is free parking for Blue Light services, care and social workers and other volunteers supporting the Covid-19 response in Swingate South car park.

Is the indoor market still open?

Yes, we have reopened the indoor market and customers should follow the social distancing advice and wear face coverings.

Are the town centre toilets open?

Yes, the toilets in the town centre are available to use.

Will the grass still be cut in Stevenage?

Following the announcement from Government, we are completing our “tidy up” of the town earlier than expected to comply with the isolation advice. We have a legal duty to mow road verges to ensure clear sight lines for road users so our grass cutting will be limited to this obligation.

Can I visit the Crematorium, Cemetery, or memorial site?

Yes, you can visit a cemetery, burial ground or garden of remembrance to pay respects to a member of your household, a family member or a friend.
