75th Anniversary of the New Town - Events in November
75th Anniversary Walks
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the designation of Stevenage as the first post-war new town on 11 November 1946, we are leading a series of walks across the town. Each walk has stops for refreshments built in along the way and lasts between an hour and an hour and a half. It’s free to come but booking is essential.
- Sish Lane is where the old town meets the new. Development Corporation workers moved here as the very first neighbourhood in the new town. Experimental flats at Stoney Hall are no longer with us but at the time they were a bold statement overlooking the King George V playing fields. Saturday 6 November 10.30am Sish Lane (meet at the Popple Way shops).
- Shephall was a village with its own rich history before it was absorbed by the new town. Visit key village sites like the church and pub and find out about the story of Shephalbury Manor and its evolution into a centre for the Coptic church in the UK. Explore the village origins of the new town neighbourhood’s street names and find out about a local historian with her roots in the village. Friday 12 November 10am, Shephall, meet at the Red Lion pub.
