“The Heart of a Town Lies in its People” and at Stevenage Borough Council, our people are at the heart of what we do.

Stevenage is embarking on a period of growth, with ambitious plans to regenerate the Town Centre as well as delivering significant housing on strategic sites. With a Local Plan which was adopted in May 2019, it is an exciting time to join our Planning team. We are an urban authority with excellent links to London.

Given the Council’s ambitious plans to regenerate the Town Centre and deliver the objectives set out in our adopted Local Plan, an exciting placement opportunity has arisen within our Planning and Regulation team where students will be given the opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of the planning industry.

The placement would be within our Development Management and Planning Policy Teams where you will be given the opportunity to work alongside our experienced officers on different projects in order to develop your knowledge and experience in planning.

As a placement student, there is no one typical day, as you will gain experience in a variety of different aspects of planning during your time with us at Stevenage. This will range from developing an understanding of the process and determining planning applications, through to the policies which we use to determine them. One of the benefits from working with us will be that you will experience elements of your degree in action, in terms of shaping the places and spaces we live and work in every day.

You will also be offered training by our experienced officers in order to develop both your technical and communication skills and we would help to support your personal development as well.

The position will be suitable for a current University student, studying a degree that is relevant to planning. The position will be fixed term, for 1 year for 22 hours per week and will be paid at the National Living Wage.

In addition, the Council offers:

  • Flexible working hours;
  • Generous Leave Entitlement;
  • Free staff parking.
  • Career average Pension Scheme.

For an informal discussion about this role and to express an interest in the placement, please contact either James Chettleburgh (Development Manager) on 07593 528253 or e-mail or Lewis Claridge (Planning Policy Manager) on 07810 154821 or e-mail no later than Friday 24 September 2021.
