Sustainable development is about improving the quality of people’s lives whilst not damaging the local and global environment.

Our role

Local authorities can play a crucial role in sustainable development. We help drive sustainability by:

  • acting as a community leader;
  • supporting sustainable communities; and
  • delivering sustainable services and operations.

Sustainability is important to us and we acknowledge our own role in helping to create a more sustainable Stevenage.

Environmental Management Policy

Our Environmental Management Policy Statement outlines our own role in helping to create a more sustainable Stevenage whilst providing information about work we are doing to put sustainability into all our services.

Planning Policy & Sustainability

Sustainability is a huge topic and covers many areas of the council’s activities. There is still much that we need to do in the future but we can tell you what is already being done to help achieve the goal of sustainability.

Our Design Guide covers sustainability in relation to new development in the town.

Cycle to Work Scheme

We are looking into the viability of making use of the Cycle to Work scheme in the future.

To promote healthier journeys to work and to reduce environmental pollution, the 1999 Finance Act introduced an annual tax exemption, which allows employers to loan cycles and cyclists’ safety equipment to employees as a tax-free benefit.
