Background and History of So Stevenage

The Local Government Act 2000 set out a statutory duty for all District Councils to have a community strategy. A community strategy aims to promote and improve the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of an area by bringing together local public, private, voluntary and community organisations.

Stevenage Partnership was formally constituted in January 2003. The Board has 44 and an Executive of 15. See General information for Board structure.

Originally the Executive had 15 members and it mirrored the Board membership. 2 places were reserved for Stevenage Borough Council and 1 for Hertfordshire County Council, 3 places for public sector, 3 places for the private sector, 3 places for voluntary sector and 3 places for the community sector. The members of the board nominated and voted in members of the executive. We changed this structure in 2007 to create better links with other partnerships.

Once the Stevenage Partnership was formally constituted the Community Strategy was written in consultation with many partners and the wider public. The first Stevenage Community Strategy was published in 2004. See the link below to download a copy.

During 2006 a review was undertaken of the Stevenage Partnership. This resulted in the change to the governance structure that we have in place today.

Towards the end of 2006 we also thought it was time to renew our Community Strategy. This was undertaken through 2007 and we launched our new community strategy Stevenage 2021: our town our future in December 2007. As well as launching the Community Strategy we also renamed Stevenage Partnership So Stevenage.
