Environmental Action Days
These days involve several agencies, including the Police, DVLA, Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue, Hertfordshire Trading Standards and the Environmental Health and Licensing team.
The reason that Environmental Action Days are carried out is to reduce the things people consider to be part of anti social behaviour, such as fly tipping and abandoned vehicles. These are often targets for arsonists, so to remove them not only makes the area look more appealing, it also helps to reduce the number of deliberate fires that happen.
Graffitti and street rubbish is also targeted and where possible removed straight away.
Over the last twelve months Environmental Action Days have utilised a total of 268 personnel from numerous partner agencies.
- Over 18 tonnes of rubbish were cleared by SBC staff.
- 4 abandoned vehicles were removed.
- 26 vehicles were clamped by the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency and the Police for not having Vehicle Excise Licenses.
- 6 youths playing truant from School were detained by Police Community Support Officers.
- 22 separate areas of graffiti were cleaned up by SBC staff.
- Over 82 separate arson risks were identified by Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service and those responsible were advised or the hazard removed.
Although these days are planned weeks in advance and the location is kept closely guarded for obvious reasons, you can report litter, fly tipping, broken street lamps, abandoned vehicles or any other issues which spoil your enjoyment of your area via the Stevenage Borough Council Customer Service Centre on 01438-242242, alternatively you can use the 'street smart' texting service to report environmental issues.
