Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service

Stevenage Fire Station remains one of the busiest stations in Hertfordshire, handling over 1100 calls every year. It is home for two fire appliances and one arial ladder platform (ALP). There are only two of these ALP units in the entire county and the one housed at Stevenage Fire Station is capable of effecting rescues at a height of up to 25 metres. That is the equivalent of the roof of a seven storey building

It provides 24 hour cover for a town of 80.000 people together with all the surrounding villages, and the crews aim to be en route to an incident just seconds after the call is received at the Station. Of the call the Station dealt with last year 43 involved attending Road Traffic Collisions and in 24 incidents  persons injured in the collision were cut out of there vehicles. A further 13 calls involved the rescue of people from other incidents.

It has a staff of 1 Station Commander, 4 Watch Commanders, 8 junior officers and 36 fire-fighters, together with three civilian employees.

Aside from dealing with the emergency call outs, the staff under took 46 outside school and community group visits and 7 groups visited the station to see first hand how they operate.

Fire Safety and fire prevention also features highly in the day to day work of the Station.

Last year several school premises were visited and full arson audits were carried out to help prevent these buildings becoming targets for vandals during the school holidays. These audits also took place on the leisure park and in other licensed premises to help improve fire safety.

One of the biggest initiatives the station undertakes are “Home Fire Safety Checks” which will make you home a safer place and ensure that you know what to do in the event of a fire.
