Stevenage has been home to the railway  for over 158 years, with the first station being built in 1850 in what is now the old town.

Today, Stevenage sits on the main London Kings Cross to Scotland line with scores of trains passing through the station every hour during the rush hour.

The railway system in this country has its own dedicated Police Force, the British Transport Police, which was originally founded in 1826, some 24 years before Stevenage’s first station was built.

Stevenage forms part of their ‘London North’ area, which covers the National Rail system in north London, Essex, East Anglia and the northern Home Counties. It also covers the high speed rail link to the Channel Tunnel (HS1). The Area employs 426 police officers, 41 special constables and 165 support staff.

The team that covers Stevenage has one sergeant, four constables and 12 Police Community Safety Officers.

These officers are responsible for public safety on the railway and all its stations. They also investigate all offences committed on railway property, including the car parks, and work closely with the Revenue Protection Teams to prevent fare evasion.

They work closely with the Stevenage Community Safety Partnership to ensure that public safety is maintained, not only on the station and the trains, but also in relation to those visiting the town.

Last year stop and search operations were carried out in relation to weapons and drugs and the BTP remain fully committed to prevent and arrest those who  are travelling to Stevenage with the intention to commit crime.

If you need to contact the officers who cover Stevenage, they are based at Kings Cross Station on 020 7922 9095.

British Transport Police run a dedicated anti terrorist hotline on which any information regarding terrorism or terrorist attacks can be passed. The number is 0800 789 321. All calls are treated in confidence.

They also have a dedicated Graffiti e-mail address on which you can give information on any graffiti artist, taggers or vandals who operate on our railway system.

e-mail: graffiticrime@btp.pnn.police.uk

There is also a non emergency telephone number 0800 40 50 40.

This number is free and confidential and it can be used to report any sort of crime on the railway system.
