Crime Prevention
Guidance on how to protect yourself from thefts and burglaries.
At home
Make sure your front door has a chain fitted and use it.
Fit a spy hole so you can see who is calling.
Join your neighbourhood watch group, and advertise the fact you are a member by putting a neighbourhood watch logo or sign in your window.
Fit a burglar alarm. Many alarm systems are available now and DIY stores sell types that you can fit one yourself at reasonable prices. Most insurance companies offer discounts on home insurance if you have a system fitted.
Mark and record your property. Make a record of the make type and serial numbers of your electrical property and photograph your valuables. These records can be invaluable if you do lose property in a crime as it makes the property identifiable to you, and the photographs can be used to help the Police trace your property.
The same applies to marking your property with an ultra violet pen or marker. If the Police recover it, it can be traced to you immediately.
Keep garden sheds and garages locked.
Don’t leave windows open if the house is left unoccupied.
Don’t leave ground floor windows open at night, and never leave anything of value near an open window at any time.
