Fairtrade aims to ensure that the people in developing countries, who make the goods sold in this country, get a price that fairly rewards their work. This helps them work in better conditions and a safer environment.
To become a Fairtrade town, five goals must be met. They are:
- Local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade
- At least two Fairtrade products are readily available in local shops and served in local cafes/catering establishments
- Fairtrade products are used by a number of local work places and community organisations
- Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign
- A local Fairtrade steering group is formed to ensure continued commitment to its Fairtrade Town status.
