Fairtrade in Stevenage
Having decided to apply for Fairtrade Town status, a Steering Group was established in 2005, which was a cross-party, and non-political group, formed with both a Constitution and Terms of Reference. A designated Lead Officer, together with a local Co-ordinator, and a Secretary and Treasurer were also appointed.
- The guarantees behind the Fairtrade Mark are that:
- Farmers receive a fair and stable price for their products
- Farmers and plantation workers have the opportunity to improve their lives
- Greater respect for the environment
- Small-scale farmers gain a stronger position in world markets.
- A closer link between consumers and producers.

The Fairtrade 'five goals' for a town to achieve are:
- The local Council passes a Resolution supporting Fairtrade and agrees to serve Fairtrade tea and coffee at its Meetings and in its offices.
- A local Fairtrade Steering group is convened to ensure continued commitment to its Fairtrade Town status.
- Media coverage and popular support is attracted for Fairtrade.
- A range of Fairtrade products are readily available in the area's shops, and served in at least two local cafes or catering establishments.
- Fairtrade products are used by at least ten local businesses and organisations.
