Fairtrade in Stevenage

Having decided to apply for Fairtrade Town status, a Steering Group was established in 2005, which was a cross-party, and non-political group, formed with both a Constitution and Terms of Reference.  A designated Lead Officer, together with a local Co-ordinator, and a Secretary and Treasurer were also appointed.

The Fairtrade 'five goals' for a town to achieve are:

  1. The local Council passes a Resolution supporting Fairtrade and agrees to serve Fairtrade tea and coffee at its Meetings and in its offices.
  2. A local Fairtrade Steering group is convened to ensure continued commitment to its Fairtrade Town status.
  3. Media coverage and popular support is attracted for Fairtrade.
  4. A range of Fairtrade products are readily available in the area's shops, and served in at least two local cafes or catering establishments.
  5. Fairtrade products are used by at least ten local businesses and organisations.
