The council is responsible for the naming and numbering of streets, and for the maintenance of street name plates in Stevenage.
Street naming and numbering
Stevenage Borough Council is responsible for the naming and numbering of all streets and buildings in the district.
If you are developing land and buildings please let us know as soon as possible (contact details are on the right). This is neccessary even if you are splitting an exisiting property into flats. We can record addresses and liaise with Royal Mail for allocation of post codes.
The selection of street names is a matter which requires careful consideration to ensure that they are suitable for the development and will not conflict with or duplicate existing names within the town.
Street naming and numbering can sometimes be a highly sensitive and emotive issue, particularly when it becomes necessary to make changes. Streets are named and buildings numbered when they are first built, but sometimes they have to be changed, for example if there are new buildings nearby. We do not make changes unless we have to because of the inconvenience it can cause.
Street name plates
The council is responsible for ensuring that street name plates are provided and fitted in suitable positions.
It is important, as we travel further from our local area, that we can find where we are, and where we want to go, quickly and efficiently. Most importantly it is vital in the event of an urgent situation that you and your street can be located quickly by the Emergency Services.
The council is also responsible for the repair and maintenance of street name plates when this becomes necessary either due to accidental damage, vandalism, or general wear and tear. Use the online form below to report a damaged, missing or illegible street name plate or contact us at the address below.

In the case of a new development however, the developer is responsible for the erection of name plates to the council's specification.
