Refuse and recycling collections

Wheelie bins and recycling boxes left on the town’s pavements and walkways outside of the prescribed presentation \ collection times can impact negatively upon the local environment, pose an obstruction and be a potential arson risk.

Stevenage Borough Council requests that you:

  • store your bins within the boundary of your own property at all times other than when they are on the boundary awaiting collection.
  • put bins out for collection no earlier than 7pm the night before collection and no later than 7am on collection day.
  • return emptied bins \ boxes back onto your property at the earliest opportunity.
  • not leave waste out for collection that cannot fit into your wheelie bin.

Non-compliance with the requested actions above will result in a notice being issued in accordance to section 46 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (C.43).

This notice provides information about what corrective measures need addressing.

Breach of a Section 46 Notice will result in a Fixed Penalty of £100.00 being issued.  Non payment will result in possible prosecution with a fine being applied of up to £1,000.00.

To find out when your next refuse or recycling collection will be use the link to the right of this page or the 'Find' link at the top of the page.

How does the service work?

Your black wheeled bin for your household waste is collected every other week and all your recycling boxes (red, blue, brown and black) are collected the week in between.

Please do not put your bins or boxes out before 7pm on the day before your collection.  If you put them out on your collection day, please ensure this is done by 7am. Residents who continually put out their rubbish earlier risk enforcement action being taken.

To find out which day of the week your waste and recycling is collected or the dates that your recycling boxes are due to be collected please see the links below:

You can now use your different coloured bins to recycle a wider range of materials.

Flats

These changes do not apply to flat blocks. The current collection service provided is not changing.

Larger and smaller bins

If you would like a smaller bin, please fill out the form and we will change your bin.

By recycling your waste, the new wheeled bin should be large enough for most households. A larger wheeled bin maybe issued to households that have 5 or more people permanently living at the address. Consideration will also be given in other exceptional circumstances.

Please use the link to the right to fill out the form. All sections need to be filled out.

Once your application form has been returned and approved, a larger wheeled bin will be delivered to your property and your smaller wheeled bin will be removed. Please be aware that a spot check can be carried out to ensure you are recycling all possible materials.

Disposable Nappies

If you have children under 3 years of age and use disposable nappies, we offer a separate collection scheme. We will provide you with purple sacks to put your nappies in. The sacks will be collected by a dedicated team on your recycling week. On your refuse collection week you need to put the nappies into your wheeled bin.

If you wish to apply to go onto the scheme please contact the Customer Service Centre on 01438 242242 and request a nappy collection application form.

If you are using reusable nappies then you could get up to £50 cashback.  Use the link on the right to find out more.
