General information

The aim of the play service is to provide free, adult supervised, open access play opportunities for Stevenage children aged between 5 – 14 years, in a safe and stimulating environment.

Children can choose to attend or leave a play session at anytime whilst the centre is open.

A child under 5 years old may attend if accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. The programmes and equipment etc are more suitable for children over 5 years old. We aim to achieve equal opportunities for all children, with due regard for their ability, colour, creed, race and gender.

Whilst the play centres are more flexible than school, antisocial behaviour e.g. name calling, swearing and fighting will be challenged. Where a child has repeated difficulties, play staff may contact parents for support or exclude a child for a defined period.

We operate 3 neighbourhood play centres throughout the year. The service is free of charge, registered and inspected by Ofsted and meets National Daycare Standards.

We are proud of our services for children and recognise the important benefits which play has for children and for family life.

Open access

Our play centres are “drop-in facilities”. Children are free to join or leave at any time during a session. Please note that we are NOT a childminding service.

Children's information forms

Every child will be given a children's information form accompanied by a letter, alternatively a form can be downloaded using the link on the right. Parents are asked to complete and return this form with accompanying photo as soon as possible. This confidential information is needed in case of an emergency and to help staff support your child's needs. Please speak to the play staff if your child has particular needs.

Outdoor play equipment has been installed at some play centres. The play staff are outside as much as possible, however, continuous outdoor supervision cannot always be guaranteed. Play staff cannot, therefore, be responsible for children who leave the premises.

Photographs are often taken for playscheme purposes, such as training or local press coverage. If you have any objection to this please inform a member of staff on entry to the Play Centre.

Illness or accident

If your child becomes ill or has an accident, play staff will contact the parent/carer from the details given on your child's information form. In order for play staff to act promptly and support your child's needs in an emergency situation please inform them of any changes to your child's emergency contact information.

Play Staff are unable to administer any medication to your child.

Coach trips and off site activities form an exciting part of our service. To enable a child to take part in a trip, parental consent is required. A special form is provided at the Centre for each trip.  Staff adhere to strict guidelines concerning numbers of children and their ages.

Children are always split into groups with a Playworker and stay together for the duration of the trip. Places on our outings are allocated on a first come, first served basis! Parent consent forms obtained at the Play Centre need to be returned as soon as possible.

All of our play schemes are inspected by Ofsted early years to the National Out of School Day Care Standards. For further information please contact Ofsted on:
