Town Centre Regeneration Strategy

The Council's Town Centre Regeneration Strategy was published in 2002 and provides an integrated framework for the transformation of the town centre.

The Strategy is now used as the basis of the current planning guidance and sets the context for the emerging proposals in the development competition.

The Strategy called for:

The Strategy informed the preparation of a Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) document for the Town Centre. Since the original supplementary planning guidance was adopted in 2002, the planning context has significantly changed and this has now been superseded by the Town Centre Supplementary Planning Document.

This document will be used to ensure that the council’s planning policies are reflective of local needs and aspirations as well as national and regional planning policy.

The potential scope of the town centre regeneration project has increased as the Stevenage population has grown and proposals outlined in the East of England Plan have suggested Stevenage as a sub-regional town centre.
