Town Centre Supplementary Planning Document
The documents will be used to ensure that the council’s planning policies are reflective of local needs and aspirations as well as national and regional planning policy.
Since the original supplementary planning guidance was adopted in 2002, the planning context has significantly changed. The potential scope of the town centre regeneration project has increased as the Stevenage population has grown and proposals outlined in the East of England Plan have suggested Stevenage as a sub-regional town centre.
The new SPD supersedes the 2002 Town Centre SPG and provides guidance on:
- The potential for a significant increase in retail floorspace, restaurants, cafes, bars and take-away restaurants
- New or modernised civic facilities
- Town centre residential accommodation, including affordable housing
- The development of an integrated transport strategy, covering:
- Access to the town centre, including the train and bus stations
- Improved pedestrian and cycle links across the town centre and ring road
- A car parking strategy.
