Town Centre Area Action Plan

What is the Town Centre Area Action Plan?

Government planning guidance recommends that Area Action Plans should be developed as part of the new planning system for areas where significant change or conservation is needed and can be achieved through the planning system.  This Area Action Plan focuses on delivering growth and stimulating regeneration in the town centre.

Stevenage was designated as Britain’s first New Town in 1946.  The town centre remains a key example of post war planning, and for this reason includes a conservation area and listed buildings.  The centre is in need of redevelopment to provide modern accommodation to attract retailers and investment.  The importance of the town centre as a focussed retail area for Stevenage warrants an Area Action Plan to be prepared, building upon a range of existing strategies, initiatives and planning guidance already in place.

What is the preferred options consultation document?

Our preferred options consultation document sets out our preferred policies to help deliver our vision for the future of Stevenage town centre.  The document explains how and why we have chosen our preferred options; how our options contribute towards the soundness of the plan; why alternative options have been rejected; and what implications the options may have.

A Sustainability Appraisal has been produced to accompany the consultation document, which considers the social, economic and environmental effects of the plan’s proposals.

Our preferred options consultation will be available between 4th February and 18th March 2010.  See the link below to view the consultation documents
