Core Strategy
What is a Core Strategy?
A Core Strategy sets out the broad vision for the future of Stevenage as an emerging regional centre. It gives spatial expression to the sustainable community strategy and implements the policies of the emerging East of England Plan. It provides high level policy guidance on housing, jobs, open space, transport, shopping, etc for the period to 2021.
The Core Strategy forms the policy framework for the whole of the local development framework for Stevenage. All other plans that we produce must be in conformity with the Core Strategy.
What are Generic Development Control Policies?
Generic development control policies are town-wide and non site specific policies that the council will use to determine planning applications. Most state the circumstances under which planning permission will or will not be granted for particular forms of development.
What is a Preferred Options consultation document?
A Preferred Options consultation document sets out our preferred policies that will help to deliver our vision for the future of Stevenage. It is the second in a series of consultations that we will carry out on the document.
Our preferred options are based on the objectives of the sustainable community strategy for Stevenage, the policies of the emerging East of England Plan, the results of our evidence studies, the findings of our sustainability appraisal and the comments we received to the Key Issues and Alternative Options consultation stage.

The new planning system requires plans to go through a process called Sustainability Appraisal (SA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). This is to consider the social, economic and environmental effects of the plan’s proposals. This process has informed our preferred options.
Our Preferred Options consultation document takes account of evidence studies we have carried out.
