Dangerous structures and public safety

Information on what to do if you think a structure is in a dangerous condition.

If a structure is in a dangerous condition and puts the occupants or the public at risk the council may take action regardless of who owns the property. The owner may be required to evacuate or demolish the building or carry out work to ensure the safe passage of the public. If the work has to be carried out immediately the council may do the work and recover the costs from the owner.

We give priority to dangerous structures over all other works.

Our service standard is to inspect them immediately and to initiate appropriate action.

Our 24hr Dangerous Structures Service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our service is jointly manned on a rota basis by Principal and Senior Building Control Surveyors from Stevenage Borough and North Herts District Councils.

For help and advice on dangerous structures during normal working hours, please contact Building Control on 01438 242 264, or by email at: buildingcontrol@stevenage.gov.uk
