Stevenage people set sail for the Lee Valley White Water Centre and the London 2012 Park to get a first glimpse of where the Games will be taking place.
The mayor was joined last week by several local community members on a tour of the White Water Centre – Hertfordshire’s only Olympic venue. They then took a trip up the Olympic tower viewing gallery to get a bird’s eye view of the park in Stratford, organised by Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners.
“It was very exciting to visit the park and the rafting centre and to get a sneak preview of the places that will be the talk of the globe this summer,” said Mayor Carol Latif.
“We’re proud Stevenage will play a part in the games by hosting the torch relay and training camps for world class athletes. We hope that the Olympics will encourage local people in their sporting endeavours as well as providing fresh opportunities for local businesses.”
Training camps in Stevenage include Ridlins Athletics Track, Stevenage Football Club, Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre and Marriotts Gymnastics Centre. Between them they can provide facilities for training in a diverse range of sports including table tennis, trampolining, athletics, football and wrestling.
