Stevenage Town Centre businesses reopen

17 Jun 2020

Following the Government’s continued lifting of lockdown restrictions in response to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, shops and businesses in Stevenage Town Centre have reopened once again.

Shoppers and business owners will be asked to continue to follow the Government’s social distancing guidelines and keep a minimum of two metres away from individuals outside of their own household.

To help achieve this, and to ensure that shoppers and retailers can enjoy peace of mind while in the Town Centre, Stevenage Borough Council has created additional signage and markings to enable people to move safely while going about their business.

Three sets of different coloured markings have been painted (temporarily we should add) on the paving throughout the town.

Green Markings - these can be found outside of stores and are for queuing. With social distancing measures in place, shops will not be able to safely facilitate numbers at their usual capacity, so some waiting outside is inevitable.

White Markings - a two lane system (just like a road) has been marked out to enable to people to move freely and safely through the area.

Yellow Markings - rest areas, such as benches, have been marked out with a yellow line to enable shoppers to sit down and remain the required two metres away from pedestrians. You should not, however, share a bench with anyone from outside your household unless you are the required distance apart.

Pubs, cafes and hairdressers will not be open, but may be free to do so as part of the Government’s next lifting of restrictions. For now they remain closed.

The Indoor Market will be open from Wednesday 17 June.

The majority of our traders will be fully open and trading but a few will remain closed to comply with Government guidelines. For information regarding the traders that will be open, please contact indoor.market@stevenage.gov.uk.

Again, to ensure safety, we have created one entrance for customers coming into the market (South Entrance) and an exit at what is usually the North Entrance.

Customers coming into the market will be met at the door and may have to queue for a short while as we are only allowing a certain amount of customers into the market at any one time to ensure it is kept safe. There is also Green distance marking on the pavement at the side of the market, if customers are required queue.

Just as in the Town Centre an arrow system will be marked on the floor for customers to follow, ensuring safe movement.

For additional hygiene, there is a cleaning station on the entrance for customers to sanitise their hands as entering the market and eight hand sanitisers have been installed throughout the market.

Some of the public toilets will not be in service but will be opening shortly.
