Celebrate!!! Returns to Showcase Diversity in Stevenage

12 Sep 2019

Stevenage World Forum’s annual Celebrate!!! event returns to the Gordon Craig Theatre on Saturday 19 October to bring you an exciting display of multicultural performances that the whole family can enjoy.

Run in partnership with Stevenage Borough Council and now in its seventeenth year, a variety of local and well-known performers will come together to put on a diverse range of music and entertainment.

This year, spectators can look forward to Black History Month celebrations, a steel band ensemble, folk singer Kelly Oliver, jazz guitarist Ben Brown, soul artist Decosta Boyce Irish, Polish, Filipino and Punjabi dancers and many more fantastic performers.

Kate Belinis, Chair of Stevenage World Forum said: “On behalf of the Board of Stevenage World Forum for Ethnic Communities, we are delighted that the Celebrate Team has once again worked very hard to put on this annual show to showcase our local talented communities and to bring awareness of the rich and vibrant cultures we have across Stevenage. We hope that people will come and enjoy the fantastic show planned.”

Commenting on the importance of Celebrate!!! event, Cllr Michelle Gardner from Stevenage Borough Council said: “Celebrate!!! is an excellent way for our community to reflect on the diverse histories of those from minority backgrounds, taking note of the achievements and contributions to the social, political, economic and cultural development in Stevenage and modern Britain.”

Celebrate!!! will also be hosting the Campbell Younge Award, which is presented each year to a person who deserves recognition for their outstanding achievements or service to their community. The award is named after two local pioneers who worked tirelessly on behalf of all communities in Stevenage. They were Albert Campbell, our first Black Mayor of Stevenage in 1987 and Reba Younge, a Caribbean mother and nurse who set up a support group for Asian women whilst fostering children and raising her own three sons alone.

Since the first Celebrate!!! in 2002, more than 1,100 performers have participated in the event and we hope 2019’s event will be the biggest yet. This year we want you to get involved! Use the hashtag #CelebrateStevenage2019 to show us how you celebrate diversity in Stevenage. Our favourite posts will be shared on Stevenage Borough Council’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.

Tickets for Celebrate!!! are available for a cost of just £9.50 and can be purchased online at www.gordon-craig.co.uk or by calling the Gordon Craig Theatre box office on 01438 363200.
