Stevenage Works to secure jobs and skills boost

17 Jul 2018

A new partnership has been launched today to secure jobs and training for local people linked to Stevenage town centre regeneration plans and major investment in the town’s council housing stock.

Stevenage Borough Council, North Hertfordshire College (NHC), and JobCentre Plus signed the Stevenage Works partnership agreement at North Hertfordshire College’s Engineering and Construction Campus.

Stevenage Borough Council’s Leader Sharon Taylor and NHC’s Principal and Chief Executive Kit Davies also met with construction students at the Campus site.

The initial focus of Stevenage Works will be on construction and business administration skills. The partners will work together to provide training and jobs including apprenticeships for young people and unemployed adults. Jobcentre Plus, will identify local candidates and North Hertfordshire College will deliver training, providing new and long-term unemployed jobseekers with basic construction skills as well as CV and interview training.

Stevenage Borough Council is working with an international developer on an ambitious programme to regenerate Stevenage Town Centre. The council is also working with Wates and Mulalley on the refurbishment of 550 low rise flat blocks and the contractors have committed to providing jobs and training for local people.

Kit Davies, Chief Executive of Hart Learning Group and Principal of North Hertfordshire College, said: “At North Hertfordshire College and Hart Learning & Development, everything we do is about helping individuals get where they want to be in life and helping businesses to improve and grow. We’re experts at delivering apprenticeships and other training locally and nationally. We’re rooted in the communities of Stevenage and North Hertfordshire and I’m confident that Stevenage Works will help local people get back into jobs or further training.”

Sharon Taylor, Leader of Stevenage Borough Council said: “We are committed to ensuring local people benefit from the major regeneration underway across Stevenage and with this exciting partnership we can maximise those benefits with jobs, training and community improvements. By working with North Hertfordshire College, JobCentre Plus and our contractors we will help develop future workforces to the benefit of the people trained, the local economy and employers who will have the trained workers they need.”
