Pearl Izumi Tour success in Stevenage

07 Jun 2016

Thousands of people lined the streets of Stevenage Old Town yesterday to watch some of the world’s best male and female cyclists compete in the Pearl Izumi Tour Series.

Stevenage was one of a handful of venues across the UK to host a stage of the men and women’s Pearl Izumi Tour. Teams competed to be the fastest in a one-hour, 1.1km circuit race around the Old Town that started and finished in the High Street.

Councillor Richard Henry, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Leisure said: “This is the first time we’ve hosted the Pearl Izumi Tour and I’m pleased to say it was a big success. The races were exhilarating so I hope everyone who came out to watch enjoyed them as much as I did. Thank you to the organisers for putting on a superb event and to the whole community for supporting it.”

Stevenage Borough Council Leader, Cllr Sharon Taylor said: “It was great to see the Old Town packed with cycling enthusiasts from all ages supporting the riders. The whole day was fantastic and it was a privilege for me to stand on the podium and congratulate the winners. I hope the professionals will inspire as many people as possible to get out on their bikes and enjoy the great cycling network we have in Stevenage.”
