Get set for the Pearl Izumi Tour

01 Jun 2016

As the men and women’s riders gear up for the Stevenage stage of the Pearl Izumi Tour, make sure you’re in the Old Town on Monday 6 June for an action-packed evening of entertainment.

With less than a week to go before world-class cyclists descend on the Old Town, check the map of the 1.1km circuit before you arrive so you can pick your spot to watch the action. The women’s race gets underway at 6.30pm before the men take to the track at 8.30pm for the first ever twilight race in the UK. The Mayor of Stevenage, Cllr John Lloyd, will be presenting the stage winners with their medals at around 10pm on the podium at the finish line.

You can see riders from the likes of Team Wiggins go through their final preparations by coming along to the technical area on the High Street. Throughout the evening the sponsors of the Pearl Izumi Tour and local community groups will be offering free activities and goody bags in the Pro Zone, which is located outside The Standing Order.

Cycling enthusiasts from across the town will warm up the circuit by taking part in a time trial. The under 16s will whizz around the track from 4.30pm to 5pm before the adults saddle up from 5pm to 5.20pm. Camps Hill Cheerleaders will perform on the finish line before the races get underway.

Councillor Richard Henry, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Leisure said: “Cycling fever is sweeping across Stevenage and the community has come together to support the event. The excitement isn’t just on the track as we’ve got lots of activities for people to enjoy before the races start. I hope to see as many people as possible come out to watch the races and take advantage of some of the special deals offered by local businesses.”

Those wanting to make use of the town’s cycle paths and cycle to the event can do so knowing that they can park their bike securely in Drapers Way. The car park will be manned by security staff so cyclists just need to bring with them their own locks for their bikes. Primett Road car parks will be open as usual and the large car park next to Waitrose will be free all day on Monday 6 June (subject to availability).
